Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation (Spanish pronunciation: [se'lena kinta'ni April 16, 1971 – March 31, 1995), was an American Tejano singer. She was dubbed"the "Queen of Tejano music", her contribution to fashion and music have made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the second half of the 20th century. In 2020, Billboard magazine put her in third place on their list of "Greatest Latino Artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums and the Latin charts for songs. Her clothing choices earned her the title "Tejano Madonna". She is also regarded as one of the most famous Latin performers of all time . She is widely credited with propelling the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest of the Quintanilla family, she made her debut in the world of music as a member of the band Selena y Los Dinos, which also included her elder siblings A.B. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. In the 1980s, she was frequently accused of singing Tejano music which was a predominantly male-dominated genre. Additionally, she was refused the opportunity to perform in Texas venues. However, her fame grew following her win of the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987. She was awarded the award repeatedly. She signed with EMI Latin in 1989. Her self-titled debut album was released the following year. Her brother became her principal music producer and songwriter. Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) peaked at number 1 on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums Chart for eight consecutive months. It was described by critics of music as the "breakthrough" album of her career. One of the songs, "Como la Flor" was a big hit and was her most-loved track. Live! Live! In 1994, she came out with Amor Prohibido, which became one of the top-selling Latin albums sold in the United States. In the eyes of critics, it was responsible with launching Tejano music's very first commercial era. It became one of Latin music's most well-known subgenres.
