In 2017, Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it became the most-streamed song at the time within the space of six months. The song is a blend of reggaeton and pop music was not only a way to bring renewed interest to reggaeton music but it also attracted attention to Latin music more generally. The Billboard Top 100 featured two songs that were Spanish most of the time, and 4 more songs in the year the year 2016. At the peak of Despacito's commercial success in 2017, 19 songs that were mainly made in Spanish were in within the top 100. It climbed to 41 in 2020. When Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, many popular musicians began to join forces with reggaeton artists. Drake and Bad Bunny were part of a team in the project MIA MIA (2018), while Madonna and Maluma worked together on Medellin, 2019 In the year 2020, a handful of reggaeton performers were lamenting its inclination towards mainstream. But a fresh generation, namely Rauw Alejandro was determined to continue the evolution of reggaeton. The genre often incorporated elements from electronic dance music and other genres.
